SELECTION GUIDE

Pump Selection for Metallurgy

Metallurgical pumps operate in high-temperature, corrosive, and abrasive environments across steel mills, foundries, smelters, and plating operations. Material selection and heavy-duty construction are critical.

Acid Pickling Service

Hydrochloric, sulfuric, and hydrofluoric acid pickling lines require duplex 2205/2507, Hastelloy, or fluoroplastic-lined pumps. Consider acid concentration and temperature when selecting materials. Use double seals.

High-Temperature Cooling

Furnace cooling and continuous casting water at 60-95C. Use horizontal split case or vertical turbine pumps. 316SS or admiralty brass for cooling water. Centerline mounting for high-temp service.

Descaling Pumps

High-pressure multistage pumps (150-400 bar) for steel descaling. Heavy-duty construction, hardened wear rings, and mechanical seals with Plan 32 flush. Water must be filtered to prevent nozzle clogging.

Slurry & Scale Handling

Mill scale, iron oxide, and slag slurries are highly abrasive. Use high-chrome iron wetted parts, large passages, and low speeds. Vertical sump pumps for scale pits and collection sumps.

Plating Solutions

Zinc, nickel, copper plating electrolytes are corrosive and often contain suspended solids. Use 316SS, PVDF, or polypropylene pumps. Vertical sump designs common for plating tanks. Avoid iron contamination.

Material for Smelting

Copper smelting: acid-resistant (sulfuric acid), slurry handling. Aluminum: caustic soda (high pH, high temp). Gold: cyanide solutions (toxic, require double seals). Match material to specific process chemistry.
