OVERVIEW

Self Priming Pumps Selection Guide

Self-priming pumps automatically purge air from suction lines and establish pumping without external priming, making them ideal for flexible installation, portable service, and applications where foot valves are impractical.

Common Applications

Chemical transfer from drums and IBCs
Portable and mobile pumping
Tank farm and terminal transfer
Wastewater and sewage lift
Construction site dewatering

Typical Media

Chemical solutions and solvents
Diesel and fuel oils
Wastewater with solids
Acids and alkalis (lined models)
Clear water and cooling water

Key Standards

ISO 9906 (performance testing)
CE/PED certified
ATEX (for flammable service)

SELECTION CONSIDERATIONS

How to Choose the Right Pump

Suction Lift

Maximum suction lift typically 6-8 meters at sea level. Derate 1m per 1000m altitude. Longer suction lines increase priming time.

Priming Time

Calculate priming time based on suction line volume and pump air handling capacity. Larger priming chambers reduce time for long suction lines.

Fluid Compatibility

Standard cast iron for water and oils; stainless steel for chemicals; fluoroplastic lined for corrosive acids. Check elastomer compatibility.

Solids Handling

Self-priming trash pumps handle solids up to 50mm. Chemical self-primers require clean fluids or strainers to prevent seal damage.
