SELECTION GUIDE

Pump Selection for Oil & Gas

Oil and gas pumping applications demand API 610 compliance, sour service resistance, and high reliability for continuous operation. Key selection factors include hydrocarbon properties, H2S content, and offshore/onshore environment.

Hydrocarbon Properties

Determine API gravity, vapor pressure, viscosity, and H2S/CO2 content. Light ends (LPG, propane) require low-NPSH designs. Heavy crude needs reduced speed and larger passages.

Sour Service (H2S)

For H2S partial pressure above 0.0003 bar, specify NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliant materials. Use low-hardness carbon steel and 316SS with controlled hardness. Avoid standard 316 in high H2S.

API 610 Compliance

Specify API 610 11th edition for refinery service. Include OH2 (overhung), BB1/BB2 (between bearing), or VS4 (vertical sump) based on layout. Require API 682 seal systems.

Offshore Requirements

For offshore platforms, specify compact designs, saltwater-resistant coatings, Class I Div 2 electrical area classification, and vibration monitoring. Weight and footprint constraints may require vertical inline designs.

Seal System Selection

Plan 53B (pressurized barrier fluid with accumulator) for hazardous hydrocarbon service. Plan 32 for flashing hydrocarbons. Plan 11 for clean non-hazardous. Always specify dual seals for toxic service.

Cold Temperature Service

For cryogenic or cold service (below -20C), specify low-temperature carbon steel (LCB/LCC) or austenitic stainless steel. Verify Charpy impact test results at minimum operating temperature.
