Machine tool coolant (cutting fluid) systems circulate coolant to cutting zones for lubrication, cooling, and chip removal. Pumps handle coolant with metal fines, tramp oil, and biological growth. This guide covers pump selection for machine tool coolant delivery, filtration, and recycling.

Critical: High-Pressure Through-Tool Coolant (40โ100 bar)
High-pressure coolant (HPC) through the tool dramatically improves chip removal and tool life in machining:
- High pressure: Through-tool coolant requires 40โ100 bar (depending on tool/material). Use multistage centrifugal pump (3โ8 stages, 40โ100 bar) or screw pump (positive displacement, high pressure). Very clean coolant required (5โ10 ฮผm filtration โ fines erode tool seals and block coolant holes). 316SS (corrosion from coolant). Pressure control (relief valve, variable speed). Flow monitoring. Our high-pressure multistage range handles through-tool coolant.
- Filtration critical: HPC systems need fine filtration (5โ10 ฮผm) โ any fines = tool coolant hole blockage, seal damage. Pre-filter (50 ฮผm) + fine filter (5โ10 ฮผm). Pressure differential monitoring (filter change). Clean tank (settling + skimming). Our HPC systems include proper filtration.
- Tool life: HPC improves tool life 30โ100% (better cooling, chip evacuation). Pressure optimization (too high = turbulence, too low = poor chip removal). Flow rate depends on tool size (0.5โ5 L/min per tool). Our HPC pump + filtration system optimizes machining performance.
Critical: Abrasive Metal Fines + Tramp Oil
- Metal fines: Machining generates metal fines (5โ500 ฮผm) โ highly abrasive. Use open impeller centrifugal (large passage, less clogging) or peristaltic (only hose wears, no valves). Hardened shaft/sleeve. Tungsten carbide seal faces (abrasion-resistant). Filtration (remove fines before high-pressure pump). Strainer upstream (self-cleaning). Monitor wear (vibration, flow). Our abrasive-resistant range handles metal fines.
- Tramp oil: Hydraulic oil, way oil leaks into coolant โ tramp oil (1โ5% typical). Tramp oil: (1) feeds bacteria (coolant spoilage), (2) reduces cooling, (3) affects surface finish. Remove via: skimmer (disk/band/tube), centrifugal separator, or coalescer. Tramp oil pump = peristaltic or small gear (oil, small flow, self-priming, NBR seals). Coolant maintenance (tramp oil ๏ผ1%). Our skimmer systems remove tramp oil.
Critical: Coolant Biological Growth (Bacteria/Fungi)
- Biological growth: Water-soluble coolant is a nutrient medium โ bacteria (Pseudomonas, etc.) and fungi grow. Effects: pH drop (acidic), odor (rotten egg from H2S), corrosion, skin irritation, shortened coolant life. Control: (1) biocide dosing (diaphragm metering), (2) aeration (oxygen suppresses anaerobic bacteria), (3) tramp oil removal (oil feeds bacteria), (4) pH control (8.5โ9.5), (5) filtration (removes food source). Our coolant maintenance systems include biocide dosing.
- Corrosion from biological activity: Bacteria produce acids (pH drop) and H2S (corrosive, toxic). 316SS pump (resists corrosion). Monitor pH, bacteria count (dip slide). Coolant change interval (3โ12 months depending on maintenance). Our 316SS range resists biological corrosion.
Critical: Straight Oil vs Water-Soluble Coolant
- Straight oil (neat oil): Used for grinding, tapping, heavy machining. Viscous (20โ200 cSt), excellent lubrication, no biological growth (no water), but fire hazard (hot chips), mist (inhalation), no cooling (vs water). Use internal gear pump or screw pump (viscous, positive displacement, self-priming, NBR/FKM seals). Oil filtration (5โ20 ฮผm). Temperature control (oil coolers). Fire safety. Our PD range handles straight oil.
- Water-soluble (emulsion/synthetic): Most common (80% of machining). Good cooling, some lubrication, biological growth risk, lower cost. Use centrifugal pump (316SS or cast iron). Concentration control (refractometer, 5โ10%). pH control (8.5โ9.5). Biocide. Our centrifugal range handles water-soluble coolant.
Critical: Coolant Concentration / pH Maintenance
- Concentration: Water-soluble coolant must maintain 5โ10% concentration (too dilute = corrosion/poor lubrication; too strong = skin irritation, foam). Use refractometer (daily check). Makeup water + concentrate dosing (metering pump). Automatic concentration control (optional). Our dosing systems maintain concentration.
- pH: Maintain pH 8.5โ9.5 (below 8 = corrosion; above 9.5 = skin irritation). pH meter. pH adjuster dosing (NaOH or acid). Biocide. Our pH control systems maintain coolant pH.

Critical: Water-soluble coolant = cast iron (if pH ๏ผ8) or 316SS + NBR/FKM (oil-resistant for tramp oil) + tungsten carbide (fines) + open impeller. Straight oil = cast iron/316SS + NBR/FKM + gear/screw (viscous). Tramp oil = peristaltic/gear (NBR, oil, small flow). Biocide = 316SS/PTFE + diaphragm metering. Spent coolant = 316SS + peristaltic. High-pressure = multistage/screw (40โ100 bar) + fine filtration (5โ10 ฮผm). All = filtration + tramp oil removal + biological control + concentration/pH maintenance.
Common Problems and Solutions
Problem 1: Through-tool coolant holes block (fines). Dirty coolant has fines โ blocks tool coolant holes. Solution: fine filtration (5โ10 ฮผm) before high-pressure multistage pump. Pre-filter + fine filter. Monitor differential pressure. Our HPC filtration prevents blockage.
Problem 2: Pump wears out (metal fines). Metal fines erode impeller/seal. Solution: open impeller 316SS centrifugal or peristaltic (only hose wears). Tungsten carbide seal. Filtration. Monitor wear. Our abrasive-resistant range extends pump life.
Problem 3: Coolant smells (bacteria). Anaerobic bacteria produce H2S (rotten egg). Solution: tramp oil removal (skimmer), aeration, biocide dosing (metering pump), pH control (8.5โ9.5). Our coolant maintenance system prevents biological growth.
Problem 4: Straight oil pump loses prime (viscous). 100 cSt oil โ centrifugal can't prime. Solution: use internal gear pump or screw pump (positive displacement, self-priming). Flooded suction. Our PD range handles viscous oil.
Problem 5: Tramp oil overload (coolant spoils). Hydraulic oil leaks into coolant โ bacteria feed โ coolant spoils. Solution: tramp oil skimmer (peristaltic or small gear pump). Fix hydraulic leaks. Monitor tramp oil (๏ผ1%). Our skimmer systems remove tramp oil.
