Critical: FOG (Fats/Oils/Grease) — Food Wastewater Unique
Food plant wastewater has high FOG content — unique challenge vs. municipal wastewater:
- FOG handling: FOG (animal/vegetable fats, oils, grease) can: (1) coat impeller/piping (reduce efficiency, clog), (2) solidify when cold (fat crystallization), (3) corrode (fatty acids), (4) affect biological treatment (high FOG = foam, scum, process upset). Use: (1) screw pump or gear pump for FOG skimming (oily, viscous, NBR/FKM oil-resistant seals), (2) jacketed pump/piping (maintain >40°C — fat melts), (3) DAF (dissolved air flotation) for FOG removal before biological treatment, (4) NBR/FKM seals (oil-resistant — NOT EPDM for pure oil, but EPDM OK for water-based). Our FOG-resistant pumps handle food wastewater.
- FOG recovery: Skimmed FOG can be rendered (animal feed) or used for biodiesel/biogas — valuable byproduct. Use positive displacement pump (screw/gear) for viscous FOG. Our pumps support FOG recovery.
Critical: Biological Sludge (Shear-Sensitive + H2S)
- Shear-sensitive flocs: WAS contains biological flocs — high shear (gear/screw at high speed) breaks flocs = poor settling = effluent quality. Use: (1) peristaltic hose pump (gentle, low shear — hose squeezes, no impeller), (2) progressive cavity (low shear), (3) open impeller centrifugal for RAS (large flow, moderate shear). EPDM hose (water-based biological sludge) or NBR (if oily). Our low-shear pumps preserve floc structure.
- H2S + odor: Food wastewater (especially meat/dairy) produces H2S (toxic, rotten egg) in anaerobic conditions. Use: (1) magnetic drive or double seal (zero leakage), (2) 316SS/duplex (corrosion), (3) odor control covers, (4) gas detection, (5) PPE. Safety first. Our zero-leakage pumps prevent H2S release.
Critical: High-Solids Sludge (Peristaltic / Screw)
- Peristaltic hose pump: Best for 5–30% solids sludge (thickened, dewatered cake). Hose squeezes sludge — no impeller to clog, no seals to leak, self-priming (up to 8m dry), reversible (clear blockages). NBR hose (oil/grease-resistant — good for food sludge) or EPDM (water-based, abrasion). Hose life 2000–8000 hours. Our peristaltic pumps handle food sludge.
- Screw / progressive cavity: For viscous sludge (3–15%), screw pump provides smooth flow, self-priming, handles gas (digester). Stator (NBR/EPDM) wears with abrasive solids — replaceable. Our PD pumps handle viscous food sludge.
Critical: Anaerobic Digester (Biogas + Explosive)
- Biogas (CH4 + CO2): Anaerobic digestion of food sludge/waste produces biogas (50–70% CH4 — explosive, 5–15% in air). Use: (1) explosion-proof motors (Class I Div 1/2), (2) peristaltic or screw pump (handles gas entrainment — no vapor binding), (3) 316SS (H2S corrosion), (4) zero leakage (magnetic drive/double seal), (5) proper ventilation. Safety: CH4 explosive + H2S toxic. Our explosion-proof pumps handle digester service.
- Mesophilic (35°C) vs thermophilic (55°C): Digester temp affects sludge viscosity + pump selection. Jacketed pump if needed (maintain temp). Our pumps handle both.
Critical: Food Solids (Clogging + Abrasion)
- Food solids: Raw wastewater contains peel, seeds, pits, bone, meat scraps, vegetable matter — clogging + abrasion. Use: (1) screening (remove large solids before pump — protects pump), (2) open impeller / non-clog / screw centrifugal (large passage), (3) slurry pump (abrasion-resistant), (4) grinder pump (if needed — macerate solids). Our non-clog pumps handle food solids.

Critical: Raw wastewater (food solids+FOG) = 316SS/cast iron + NBR (FOG-resistant) + non-clog/slurry (open impeller, large passage, screening). Primary/thickened/dewatered sludge = peristaltic (NBR hose — oil-resistant, no impeller, high solids 5–30%) or screw/progressive cavity. WAS biological (shear-sensitive+H2S) = peristaltic (EPDM, low shear) or open impeller (RAS) + 316SS/duplex + zero leakage. FOG skimming = screw/gear (NBR/FKM, oily, viscous, jacketed). Digester (biogas+H2S+explosive) = peristaltic/screw (gas handling) + 316SS + explosion-proof + zero leakage. Chemicals = metering (PTFE). Effluent discharge = split case (large flow, high efficiency). All = FOG management (NBR seals, jacketed, DAF) + H2S safety (zero leakage, gas detection) + shear-sensitive (low shear for WAS) + high solids (peristaltic) + explosion-proof (digester biogas).
Common Problems and Solutions
Problem 1: Pump clogs (food solids/FOG). Peel, seeds, fat clog impeller. Solution: open impeller/non-clog slurry pump, large passage, upstream screening, grinder if needed, jacketed (FOG melts >40°C). Our non-clog pumps handle food solids.
Problem 2: Sludge pump wears (abrasive solids). Food solids/sand wear impeller. Solution: peristaltic hose pump (no impeller — only hose wears, replaceable NBR) or hard metal slurry, low speed. Our peristaltic pumps minimize wear parts.
Problem 3: WAS flocs break (high shear pump). Gear pump shears biological flocs — poor settling. Solution: low-shear peristaltic hose pump (EPDM) or open impeller centrifugal for RAS. Our low-shear pumps preserve flocs.
Problem 4: H2S release (toxic/odor). Anaerobic sludge leaks H2S. Solution: magnetic drive or double seal, 316SS/duplex, gas detection, PPE, odor control. Our zero-leakage pumps prevent H2S release.
Problem 5: FOG solidifies (cold). Fat solidifies in pump/lines. Solution: jacketed screw pump (maintain >40°C), heat-traced piping, NBR/FKM seals, flush. Our heated FOG pumps prevent solidification.
Problem 6: Digester pump gas-locks (biogas). Entrained biogas causes vapor binding. Solution: peristaltic or screw pump (handles gas, self-priming), explosion-proof motor, 316SS (H2S). Our gas-handling pumps prevent vapor lock.
