Sewage lift stations pump wastewater from low areas to treatment plants, using submersible or dry-pit pumps. This article covers lift station pump selection, wet well design, clog prevention, and control systems for municipal wastewater collection.
Sewage lift stations pump wastewater from lower to higher elevation in municipal and industrial sewer systems. These stations handle raw sewage with solids, debris, and corrosive gases, requiring non-clog pumps and reliable controls. This guide covers lift station design, dry-pit vs submersible pumps, wet well design, and pump selection.
Sewage Lift Station Types
| Type | Best For | Pump Type | Typical Flow |
| Submersible (wet pit) | Most common, small-medium stations, residential/commercial | Submersible non-clog | 10โ2,000 mยณ/h per pump |
| Dry pit (dry well) | Large municipal stations, easy maintenance, high head | Horizontal dry-pit or vertical dry-pit | 500โ50,000 mยณ/h |
| Prefabricated package | Small sites, residential, commercial, retrofit | Submersible in fiberglass/PE tank | 5โ500 mยณ/h |
| Vacuum station | Low-density areas, hilly terrain, infiltration reduction | Vacuum pump + sewage pump | Small, intermittent |
Critical: Submersible vs Dry-Pit
| Parameter | Submersible (Wet Pit) | Dry Pit |
| Installation | Pump submerged in wet well, guide rail + hoist | Pump in dry well, piping connected, floor-mounted |
| Priming | Self-priming (submerged) | Requires flooded suction or priming |
| Maintenance | Hoist out of wet well (guide rail), easy but dirty | Access in dry well, cleaner, but confined space |
| Cost | Lower (no dry well, simpler) | Higher (dry well construction, ventilation) |
| Footprint | Compact (wet well only) | Larger (wet + dry well) |
| Gas/hazard | Motor submerged (no gas issue), but seal failure = water in motor | Dry well needs ventilation (H2S, methane), ATEX if sewer gas |
| Head/flow | Limited (typically ๏ผ500m head, ๏ผ2000 mยณ/h per pump) | Unlimited (large pumps, high head, high flow) |
| Seal | Double mechanical seal (oil chamber), critical | Gland packing or mechanical seal, easier to inspect |
| Best for | Small-medium stations (most common) | Large municipal, high head, easy maintenance preference |
Critical: Non-Clog Pump Design
- Impeller types: (1) Vortex (recessed) impeller โ impeller recessed in volute, large free passage (75โ100mm), fluid moves by vortex, BEST for debris/rags, but lower efficiency (45โ60%), (2) Single-channel impeller โ one large channel, good solids handling, efficiency 60โ75%, (3) Multi-channel (2/3 vane) โ higher efficiency (70โ85%), smaller passage, more clogging risk, (4) Chopper/cutter impeller โ cuts solids, for heavy debris, but higher power, wear. Our submersible sewage pumps offer vortex and channel impellers.
- Free passage: Minimum 75โ100mm for municipal sewage (passes 75mm sphere). Critical for non-clog. NEVER use standard clean-water impeller for sewage.
- Shaft seal: Submersible = double mechanical seal (silicon carbide/carbon) with oil chamber (lubrication + leak detection). Seal failure = water enters motor โ burnout. Seal leak detection (electrode) standard. Our submersible pumps have double seals + leak detection.
Critical: Wet Well Design
| Parameter | Recommendation | Why |
| Wet well volume | Minimum 5ร pump flow rate / max starts/hour (4โ10 starts/h) | Prevent excessive cycling (motor thermal stress) |
| Geometry | Circular or rectangular, sloped bottom (1:4) to pump inlet | Prevent sediment/septicity, uniform flow |
| Pump submergence | Minimum 0.5โ1.0m above pump inlet (prevent vortex) | Vortex = air entrainment โ cavitation, vibration |
| Anti-vortex | Anti-vortex plates, baffles, proper spacing | Prevent free-surface vortices (air ingestion, sewer gas) |
| Multiple pumps | 2โ4 pumps (N+1), alternating duty | Redundancy, handle peak flow, maintenance |
| Trash rack | Bar screen at inlet (50โ150mm) or comminutor | Prevent large debris damaging pump |
| Ventilation | Wet well vented (sewer gas: H2S, methane, CO2) | Safety, odor, corrosion (H2S โ sulfuric acid) |
| Access | Maintenance platform, hoist, access hatch (minimum 600mm) | Pump removal, confined space entry |
| Level control | Ultrasonic or pressure transducer (not floats for large) | Reliable level sensing, pump staging |
Critical: Flow and Peak Factor
- Average dry weather flow (ADWF): Base sewage flow (per capita 150โ250 L/day ร population + industrial + infiltration).
- Peak factor: Peak flow / average flow. Typical: (1) small residential 3โ5ร, (2) medium municipal 2โ3ร, (3) large 1.5โ2ร. Pump station must handle peak flow without surcharge (sewer backup).
- Staging: Multiple pumps stage on as level rises: Pump 1 (duty) starts at level 1, Pump 2 at level 2 (peak), Pump 3 at level 3 (extreme/backup). Alternating duty equalizes wear.
- Infiltration/inflow (I/I): Rainwater enters sewer (cracks, connections) โ flow increases dramatically during storms. Design for I/I (often 2โ5ร ADWF). Critical for combined sewers.
Critical: Head Calculation
- Static head: Elevation difference between wet well low level and discharge point (force main to gravity sewer or treatment plant).
- Friction head: Force main friction (Darcy-Weisbach or Hazen-Williams). Sewage force mains 100โ500mm, velocity 0.6โ2.5 m/s (minimum 0.6 m/s to prevent sediment, maximum 3 m/s to prevent wear). C-factor: ductile iron C=130, PVC C=150, concrete C=120.
- Minor losses: Entrance, exit, bends, valves, check valve. Check valve significant (0.5โ2m). Use low-loss check valve (nozzle check) for large stations.
- TDH: Static + friction + minor. Sewage lift pumps typically 10โ60m head.
Critical: Materials and Corrosion
| Component | Material | Why |
| Casing / volute | Cast iron (epoxy coated) or ductile iron | Sewage mildly corrosive, coating protects. H2S crown corrosion in pipes. |
| Impeller | Cast iron, high-chrome, or 316SS (industrial) | Cast iron standard. High-chrome for abrasives. 316SS for corrosive industrial sewage. |
| Shaft | 420SS or 316SS | Corrosion resistance, strength |
| Shaft sleeve | 316SS or ceramic | Wear at seal/bushing |
| Mechanical seal | Silicon carbide / carbon, NBR/EPDM | Sewage, double seal with oil chamber |
| Wet well / piping | Concrete (H2S-resistant coating), ductile iron (lined), PVC/HDPE | H2S โ sulfuric acid โ crown corrosion. Coat concrete. |
| Industrial (corrosive) | 316SS, duplex, or fluoroplastic | Chemical plant sewage (acid, solvent, high chloride) |
Critical: Common Problems
- Problem 1: Pump clogs (rags, wipes, debris). Modern sewage has "flushable" wipes, rags, plastic โ clog impeller. Solution: vortex impeller (large passage), chopper pump, inlet screen,ๅฎๆ cleaning. Our vortex non-clog pumps minimize clogging.
- Problem 2: Seal failure (submersible motor burnout). Double mechanical seal fails โ water enters motor โ burnout. Solution: quality double seal (SiC/carbon), oil chamber, leak detection,ๅฎๆ inspection, proper cable entry. Our submersible pumps have reliable seals.
- Problem 3: Wet well septicity / H2S. Long retention, warm temp โ septic โ H2S gas โ odor, crown corrosion, safety hazard. Solution: minimize wet well volume (but not below cycling limit), forced main flushing, H2S monitoring, ventilation, chemical dosing (iron salts, nitrate). Our designs minimize septicity.
- Problem 4: Excessive cycling (wet well too small). Small wet well โ pumps start/stop frequently โ motor thermal stress, reduced life. Solution: wet well volume โฅ5ร flow/starts, proper level hysteresis. Our designs size wet wells correctly.
- Problem 5: Vortex / air entrainment. Low level โ vortex โ air + sewer gas ingestion โ cavitation, vibration, gas in force main. Solution: minimum submergence, anti-vortex plates, baffles. Our wet well designs prevent vortices.
- Problem 6: Force main sedimentation (low velocity). Velocity ๏ผ0.6 m/s โ solids settle โ pipe blockage, septicity. Solution: minimum velocity 0.6 m/s (1 m/s preferred),ๅฎๆ flushing, proper pipe sizing. Our designs maintain scouring velocity.
