Reverse osmosis (RO) high-pressure pumps deliver feed water at 10โ€“80 bar through semi-permeable membranes for desalination, water reuse, and ultrapure water production. These pumps require high efficiency, precise pressure control, and corrosion-resistant materials for seawater and brackish water service. This guide covers RO pump selection, energy recovery, materials, and system design.

Critical: High-Pressure Pump Selection

Pump TypeBest ForPressureFlowEfficiencyNotes
Multistage centrifugal (BB3/BB5/ring-section)Most RO systems, medium-large10โ€“80 bar50โ€“5000 mยณ/h75โ€“85%Most common, reliable, VFD, high flow
Positive displacement (plunger/ piston)Small systems, high pressure, low flow40โ€“100+ bar1โ€“50 mยณ/h80โ€“90%Pulsating flow, needs dampener, high maintenance
Vertical multistage (inline)Small commercial RO, compact10โ€“40 bar1โ€“100 mยณ/h60โ€“75%Compact, low cost, limited size
High-speed centrifugal (with turbocharger)Large seawater RO50โ€“70 bar1000+ mยณ/h80โ€“88%Integrated energy recovery, large plants

Critical: For medium-large RO systems, multistage centrifugal pumps (BB3 axially split or ring-section) are standard โ€” high efficiency, reliable, VFD-controlled, handle 10โ€“80 bar. For small systems, positive displacement plunger pumps. Our multistage pumps cover RO high-pressure service.

Critical: Operating Pressure by Feed Water

Feed WaterTDS (mg/L)Osmotic PressureRO Operating PressureRecovery

Brackish water1,000โ€“10,0000.7โ€“7 bar15โ€“30 bar60โ€“80%

Brine / high TDS๏ผž45,000๏ผž30 bar70โ€“100+ bar25โ€“40%

Critical: RO operating pressure must exceed osmotic pressure + net driving pressure (10โ€“15 bar). Seawater = 50โ€“80 bar (high-pressure pump critical). Pump pressure rating must match feed TDS. Our multistage pumps handle up to 80+ bar for seawater RO.

Critical: Materials for RO High-Pressure Pumps

ComponentBrackish WaterSeawaterWhy
Casing316SS or duplex 2205Superduplex 2507 or duplex 2205Chloride corrosion (seawater 19,000 ppm). 316SS pits ๏ผž1000 ppm.
Impeller / shaft316SS or duplexSuperduplex 2507High chloride + high velocity โ†’ pitting/crevice corrosion
Mechanical sealSilicon carbide / carbon, EPDM/PTFESilicon carbide, PTFE, superduplexHigh pressure, corrosion, no copper alloys
Fasteners316SSSuperduplex or titaniumChloride stress corrosion cracking risk
Piping316SS or FRPSuperduplex, titanium, or FRPHigh pressure + chloride. FRP common for large seawater.
Valves316SSSuperduplex or titaniumSame corrosion concerns

Critical: Seawater RO = superduplex 2507 (PREN ๏ผž40) or duplex 2205 for wetted parts. NEVER 316SS or carbon steel for seawater high-pressure (rapid pitting/crevice corrosion). Brackish = 316SS (low chloride) or duplex. Our RO pumps offer duplex/superduplex materials.

Critical: Energy Recovery (Seawater RO)

  • Why needed: Seawater RO concentrate exits at 50โ€“70 bar with 50โ€“65% of feed flow. This represents 40โ€“60% of input energy. Without recovery, energy cost is prohibitive (3โ€“5 kWh/mยณ vs 2โ€“3 with recovery).
  • Devices: (1) Pressure exchanger (PX) โ€” isobaric, direct pressure transfer from concentrate to feed, 95โ€“98% efficient, most common for large SWRO, (2) Turbocharger โ€” centrifugal, boosts feed pressure using concentrate, 85โ€“92% efficient, simpler, (3) Reverse running pump / Francis turbine โ€” older, 70โ€“85% efficient. PX is industry standard for large SWRO.
  • System integration: High-pressure pump + PX work together. PX requires a booster pump (small) to match pressure. Our engineering team specifies integrated RO high-pressure + energy recovery systems.

Critical: VFD and Pressure Control

  • VFD operation: RO high-pressure pumps use VFD to: (1) adjust pressure with feed water temperature (viscosity changes), (2) maintain constant permeate flow, (3) soft start (water hammer prevention), (4) energy savings at part load. VFD standard for modern RO.
  • Pressure control: (1) constant pressure (valve throttling concentrate โ€” less efficient), (2) constant permeate flow (VFD + flow meter โ€” preferred), (3) variable pressure with recovery. Our systems use VFD constant-flow control.
  • Start-up sequence: Slow ramp (VFD) โ†’ flush at low pressure โ†’ gradually increase pressure โ†’ prevent membrane damage (water hammer, compaction). Critical for membrane life. Our VFD systems include proper start-up ramps.

Critical: Common Problems

  • Problem 1: Seawater corrosion (wrong material). 316SS/carbon steel in seawater โ†’ pitting/crevice โ†’ pump failure. Solution: superduplex 2507 or duplex 2205 wetted parts, NEVER 316SS for seawater. Our RO pumps use correct materials.
  • Problem 2: Membrane damage (water hammer on start). Rapid pressure ramp โ†’ water hammer โ†’ membrane compaction/telescoping. Solution: VFD slow ramp (30โ€“60 sec), soft start, proper start-up sequence. Our VFD systems prevent membrane damage.
  • Problem 3: Pump cavitation (low NPSH). High-pressure pump + warm feed โ†’ NPSH critical. Solution: low-NPSH first stage, adequate feed pressure (booster pump), proper suction piping, deaeration. Our multistage pumps handle RO NPSH.
  • Problem 4: Scaling/fouling (pretreatment failure). Antiscalant under-dose, SDI high โ†’ membrane scale โ†’ pressure increases, flux drops. Solution: proper pretreatment (MF/UF), antiscalant metering,ๅฎšๆœŸ CIP, SDI monitoring. Our systems include pretreatment.
  • Problem 5: Energy waste (no recovery for SWRO). Seawater RO without energy recovery โ†’ 2ร— energy cost. Solution: PX pressure exchanger (95โ€“98% efficient), integrated high-pressure pump + booster. Our systems include energy recovery.
  • Problem 6: Seal failure (high pressure). Mechanical seal fails at 50โ€“80 bar โ†’ water leakage โ†’ trip. Solution: API 682 seal (Plan 23/32), silicon carbide faces, proper flush, seal leak detection. Our high-pressure pumps use reliable seals.
