Offshore platform pumps handle seawater lift, fire water, produced water, and hydrocarbon transfer in harsh marine environments with high corrosion, limited space, and strict safety requirements. These pumps require corrosion-resistant materials, compact design, and high reliability for unmanned operation. This guide covers offshore pump selection, seawater corrosion, material selection, and platform-specific design.

Critical: Seawater Corrosion and Materials

MaterialSeawater ResistanceUseNotes
Duplex stainless (2205, 2507)ExcellentShaft, impeller, casing, fastenersBest for seawater, pitting resistant, high strength
Super duplex (2507, Zeron 100)SuperiorHigh-chloride, hot seawaterPremium, very high pitting resistance
6% Mo super austenitic (AL-6XN, 254SMO)ExcellentCasing, impeller, high-chlorideVery corrosion resistant, expensive
316/316L stainlessModerate (pitting risk)Low-chloride, cold seawaterMay pit in warm seawater โ€” use with caution
Bronze (Ni-Al bronze, CuNi)GoodImpellers, wear rings, pipingGood seawater resistance, but galvanic risk with SS
Titanium (Gr. 1, 2, 7)SuperiorCritical parts, hot seawaterBest corrosion resistance, very expensive
Carbon steelPoor (rapid rust)Non-wetted, structuralNEVER for seawater wetted parts
Coating (epoxy, rubber)Good (if intact)Casing interior, pipingCan fail โ€” inspect regularly

Critical: Seawater is highly corrosive (chloride 19,000 ppm, oxygen, bacteria, temperature). Duplex stainless steel (2205) is the standard for offshore seawater pumps โ€” excellent pitting resistance, high strength, cost-effective. Super duplex (2507) for warm or high-chloride service. 316SS may pit in warm seawater (๏ผž20ยฐC) โ€” avoid for critical service. Titanium for extreme conditions. Our vertical turbine pumps and fire pumps offer duplex/super duplex configurations for seawater.

Critical: Vertical Turbine Pumps for Seawater Lift

  • Why vertical turbine: (1) Submerged impeller โ€” no priming needed, (2) compact footprint (vertical saves deck space โ€” critical on platforms), (3) can be mounted in caisson or sump, (4) high flow, medium-high head, (5) motor above water (easy maintenance). Vertical turbine is the standard for seawater lift and fire water on offshore platforms.
  • Design: (1) Bowl assembly (impellers + diffusers) submerged in seawater, (2) column pipe with line shaft, (3) motor on deck (above water), (4) discharge through column or separate, (5) duplex (2205) wetted parts, (6) rubber-lined column bearings (water-lubricated). Our vertical turbine pumps meet offshore standards.
  • Caisson vs sump: (1) Caisson-mounted โ€” pump in a tube (caisson) extending below sea level, common on platforms, (2) sump-mounted โ€” pump in a pit/sump, simpler but requires sump. Both use vertical turbine. Our pumps support both configurations.

Critical: Fire Water Pumps (NFPA 20)

  • Standard: NFPA 20 (Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection). Offshore platforms require fire water pumps meeting NFPA 20 โ€” reliable, automatic start, backup power, regular testing.
  • Pump type: (1) Horizontal split case fire pump (most common, high flow, easy maintenance), (2) vertical turbine fire pump (seawater, submerged, compact), (3) vertical inline (small systems). Driver: diesel engine (primary, independent of platform power) + electric motor (backup) or vice versa.
  • Seawater fire water: Most offshore platforms use seawater for fire fighting. Pump must be duplex (2205) or super duplex for seawater corrosion. NFPA 20 requires weekly testing (churn test) and annual flow test. Our fire pumps meet NFPA 20 and offer duplex materials.

Critical: Common Problems

  • Problem 1: Seawater corrosion (pitting). 316SS or carbon steel in seawater โ†’ pitting โ†’ failure. Solution: duplex (2205) or super duplex wetted parts, cathodic protection, coating,ๅฎšๆœŸ inspection. Our pumps use duplex for seawater.
  • Problem 2: Marine growth (biofouling). Barnacles, mussels grow in pump/pipes โ†’ reduced flow, blockage. Solution: chlorination (biocide dosing metering pump), antifouling coating,ๅฎšๆœŸ cleaning, strainers. Our systems include chlorination.
  • Problem 3: Fire pump failure (NFPA 20). Fire pump fails to start โ†’ safety hazard. Solution: NFPA 20 compliance, weekly testing, redundant drivers (diesel + electric), battery backup, automatic start. Our fire pumps meet NFPA 20.
  • Problem 4: Produced water pump wear (oil/solids). Produced water contains oil, sand, scale โ†’ wear/corrosion. Solution: slurry pump or API 610 with hardened trim, filtration, corrosion inhibitor,ๅฎšๆœŸ inspection. Our pumps handle produced water.
  • Problem 5: Space/weight constraints. Platform has limited deck space/weight. Solution: vertical turbine pumps (compact), skid-mounted, lightweight materials, optimized design. Our vertical pumps save space.
  • Problem 6: Hazardous area safety. Hydrocarbon gas โ†’ explosion risk. Solution: ATEX/IECEx motors, explosion-proof instruments, proper grounding, gas detection, ESD. Our systems meet hazardous area requirements.
