Fire protection water pumps deliver water at required pressure and flow to sprinkler systems, hydrants, and standpipes. These pumps must meet NFPA 20 standards and provide reliable fire suppression. This guide covers fire pump selection, types, and compliance requirements.

Critical: NFPA 20 Compliance (Fire Pump Standard)

Fire pumps are life-safety equipment โ€” NFPA 20 (Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection) governs:

  • Listed equipment: Fire pumps must be listed (UL 448, FM 1311) โ€” third-party tested for fire service. Our horizontal fire pump is designed to NFPA 20 with listed components. Pump, driver, controller all listed as a system.
  • Performance requirements: Fire pump must deliver: (1) 100% of rated flow at rated pressure, (2) 150% of rated flow at 65% of rated pressure (churn to overload), (3) shutoff pressure 140% of rated (max). No shutoff pressure ๏ผž140% (system overpressure). Performance curve verified by listed test. Our fire pumps meet NFPA 20 performance.
  • Reliability: Fire pumps must start automatically (pressure drop) and run continuously. Redundant power (electric = emergency generator; diesel = independent fuel). Weekly testing (NFPA 25). No shutoff valves on suction (except listed indicating valve). Our fire pump systems include automatic start and redundancy.

Critical: Horizontal Split Case Fire Pump (Most Common)

  • Design: Horizontal split case (axially split) double suction pump โ€” standard for fire service. Advantages: high efficiency (80โ€“88%), large flow (50โ€“5000 gpm), easy maintenance (split casing โ€” access impeller without removing piping), double suction (balanced axial thrust, low NPSH). Bronze fitted (impeller, wear rings bronze; casing cast iron) or 316SS. Our horizontal fire pump is split case double suction.
  • Driver: Electric motor (most common, 460V/3ph, TEFC, emergency power) or diesel engine (no power dependency, NFPA 20, fuel tank ๏ผž8hr, dual batteries). Diesel for critical facilities where power may fail. Both listed. Our fire pumps offer electric or diesel drivers.
  • Controller: Automatic controller (pressure switch starts pump on system pressure drop). Manual override. Weekly test switch. Listed (UL/FM). Alarm (power failure, pump failure). Our controllers are NFPA 20 compliant.

Critical: Vertical Turbine Fire Pump (Underground Source)

  • When to use: Vertical turbine fire pump when water source is underground (well, underground tank, river intake) โ€” no priming needed (bowl submerged). Space-saving (vertical). NFPA 20 compliant. Our vertical turbine pump in fire configuration.
  • Design: Bowl assembly (multistage, submerged), column pipe, discharge head above ground. Driver (electric/diesel) at top. Open lineshaft (water-lubricated) or enclosed (oil-lubricated). Flow 50โ€“5000 gpm, pressure 40โ€“200 psi (multiple bowls). Listed (UL/FM). Our vertical turbine fire pumps meet NFPA 20.

Critical: Jockey Pump (Pressure Maintenance)

  • Purpose: Jockey pump maintains system pressure (small leaks, pressure fluctuations) so main fire pump doesn't cycle on/off. Starts at pressure drop ~5 psi below system, stops at system pressure. Small flow (5โ€“50 gpm), same shutoff pressure as main (or slightly higher). Electric, continuous duty. NFPA 20 requires jockey pump for systems ๏ผž pressure maintenance needs. Our jockey pumps are small centrifugal/multistage with pressure control.
  • Important: Jockey pump is NOT for fire flow โ€” if fire starts, pressure drops below jockey setpoint AND below main pump setpoint โ†’ main pump starts. Jockey continues running but can't meet fire flow. Proper setpoint coordination (jockey start 5 psi below main start). Our systems coordinate jockey and main pump.

Critical: Foam Systems (Flammable Liquid Fires)

  • Foam concentrate pump: Foam concentrate (AFFF, AR-AFFF) is viscous (10โ€“100 cP) โ€” use internal gear pump or screw pump (positive displacement, viscous, precise proportioning 1โ€“6%). Foam-compatible seals (EPDM/PTFE โ€” check foam compatibility). Balance line (return to tank). Our PD range handles foam concentrate.
  • Foam proportioning: Foam concentrate metered into water stream (1%, 3%, or 6% depending on foam type/hazard). Proportioner (inline, bladder tank, or pump-around). Accurate ratio critical (too little = no foam, too much = waste/viscosity). NFPA 11 (Low-, Medium-, and High-Expansion Foam). Our foam systems include proper proportioning.
  • Foam solution pump: Mixed foam solution (water + concentrate) pumped through fire system โ€” standard horizontal fire pump with foam-compatible seals (EPDM/PTFE, not NBR โ€” some foams affect NBR). NFPA 11. Our fire pumps handle foam solution.

Critical: Fire Pump Testing & Maintenance (NFPA 25)

  • Weekly test: Run fire pump 10 minutes (electric) or 30 minutes (diesel) weekly. Check pressure, flow (test header), no abnormal vibration/noise. Record. NFPA 25 (Standard for Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems).
  • Annual flow test: Annual full-flow test (test header, flow meter) โ€” verify performance at 100%, 150% flow. Compare to original acceptance test. Pump replacement if performance drops ๏ผž10%.
  • Maintenance: Bearings (annual lubrication or sealed), seals (packing or mechanical โ€” fire pumps often use packing for reliability), wear rings (replace if clearance ๏ผž2x new), coupling alignment, driver (motor/diesel maintenance), controller (annual test). Our fire pumps are designed for easy maintenance (split casing).

Critical: Fire water = cast iron casing + bronze fitted (impeller/rings) + 416SS shaft + EPDM/graphite (standard NFPA 20 "bronze fitted"). Foam concentrate = 316SS/cast iron + EPDM/PTFE + gear/screw (viscous, precise). Foam solution = cast iron/bronze + EPDM/PTFE (NOT NBR for some foams). Seawater = duplex/bronze/316SS + EPDM (NOT cast iron/carbon steel). All = NFPA 20 listed + NFPA 25 testing + jockey pump + automatic start + redundant power.

Common Problems and Solutions

Problem 1: Fire pump won't start (controller/power). Power failure or controller issue. Solution: redundant power (emergency generator for electric; diesel for independent). Automatic controller (pressure switch). Weekly test. Battery backup (diesel). Our fire pump systems include redundancy.

Problem 2: Jockey pump runs constantly (system leak). System has leak โ€” jockey can't maintain pressure. Solution: find/repair leak. Jockey should cycle, not run continuously. Check for underground leaks, stuck valves. Our jockey pumps include run-time monitoring.

Problem 3: Pump performance degraded (wear rings). Wear rings worn โ€” recirculation โ€” flow/pressure drop. Solution: annual flow test (NFPA 25). Replace wear rings if clearance ๏ผž2x new. Split casing horizontal fire pump allows easy access. Our pumps have replaceable wear rings.

Problem 4: Foam proportioning wrong (no foam). Gear pump/metering inaccurate โ€” foam ratio off. Solution: use positive displacement gear pump (precise). Calibrate proportioner. Balance line. Flow verification. Our foam systems include accurate proportioning.

Problem 5: Cavitation (suction issue). Fire pump cavitates โ€” insufficient NPSH (suction lift too high, restricted suction). Solution: vertical turbine (submerged, no suction lift) or horizontal with flooded suction. Large suction piping (low velocity). No suction throttling. Our fire pumps are designed for proper NPSH.
