  • Acceptance: head ±5%, efficiency ±3% (Grade 2), ±8%/±5% (Grade 3)
  • Test fluid: water (20°C, SG — 1.0)
  • Correct for viscosity if testing with viscous fluid

Bowl Assembly Test

  • Test individual bowl assembly (impeller + diffuser)
  • Measure: bowl head, efficiency, NPSHr
  • Verify: each stage matches design
  • Multistage: total head = sum of bowl heads
  • Acceptance: per ISO 9906 or API 610

NPSH Test

  • Determine NPSHr (required) at specified flow
  • Method: reduce suction pressure until 3% head drop
  • Acceptance: NPSHr ≤ datasheet value
  • Test at: BEP and 120% BEP
  • Use: suction throttling or tank level reduction

Mechanical Run Test

  • Run at BEP for 1-4 hours (or per standard)
  • Measure: vibration, bearing temp, noise, seal leakage
  • Acceptance: vibration ≤ ISO 10816 limit, bearing temp <80°C
  • Line shaft: check bearing temp, vibration along shaft
  • Noise: ≤85 dBA (or per specification)

Hydrostatic Test

  • Pressure test casing/bowl at 1.5× design pressure
  • Hold: 10-30 minutes (per standard)
  • Acceptance: no leakage, no deformation
  • Test medium: water (with corrosion inhibitor for cast iron)
  • Also test: discharge head, column pipe, baseplate

Vertical-Specific Tests

Line Shaft and Bearing Test

  • Verify line shaft alignment, bearing clearance
  • Measure: shaft runout, bearing temperature
  • Check: lubrication system (oil/water) flow and pressure
  • Acceptance: no excessive vibration, bearing temp stable
  • Critical speed: verify operating speed away from critical

Submergence and Priming Test

  • Vertical sump: verify pump primes at minimum submergence
  • Test: start at minimum level, verify stable operation
  • Check: no vortex, no air entrainment
  • Acceptance: stable flow/pressure at minimum submergence
  • Vertical turbine: flooded suction, no priming needed

Dry-Run Protection Test

  • Test level switch, pressure monitor, or power sensor
  • Method: simulate low level, verify pump shutdown
  • Acceptance: pump stops before damage (within seconds)
  • Check: alarm signal, automatic restart (if level recovers)

Test Procedure

Pre-Test Inspection

  • Verify pump assembly (impeller, bowls, shaft, bearings)
  • Check rotation direction
  • Verify nameplate data
  • Check lubrication (oil level, water supply)
  • Connect instrumentation (calibrated)

Test Sequence

  1. Hydrostatic test (bowl/casing pressure)
  2. Bowl assembly test (individual stage performance)
  3. Hydraulic performance test (full curve)
  4. NPSH test (at BEP and 120% BEP)
  5. Mechanical run test (1-4 hours at BEP)
  6. Final inspection and report

Test Report

  • Performance curve (flow, head, power, efficiency)
  • NPSH curve (NPSHr vs flow)
  • Vibration and temperature readings (all bearings, line shaft)
  • Test conditions (fluid, temp, speed, voltage)
  • Instrument calibration certificates
  • Deviations and corrections
  • Bowl assembly test data (if multistage)

Common Test Failures

  • Low head/flow: Wrong impeller, wear, air leak. Verify impeller, check clearances, fix leaks.
  • Low efficiency: Internal recirculation, wear, wrong speed. Check wear rings, impeller, speed.
  • High vibration: Imbalance, misalignment, cavitation, critical speed. Balance, align, check NPSH.
  • High bearing temp: Misalignment, over-lubrication, wrong bearing. Align, check lube, replace.
  • NPSH high: Restricted suction, wrong impeller. Check suction piping, use low-NPSH impeller.
  • Line shaft issues: Misalignment, bearing wear, critical speed. Align, replace bearings, analyze.
  • Hydrostatic leak: Casting defect, bad gasket. Repair casting, replace gasket, retest.
  • Dry-run failure: Protection not working. Test level switch, adjust setpoint, verify wiring.

Procurement Recommendations

  1. Specify test standard (ISO 9906 Grade 2, API 610, or per project)
  2. Require hydraulic performance test (full curve)
  3. Require NPSH test (at BEP and 120% BEP)
  4. Require mechanical run test (1-4 hours at BEP)
  5. Require hydrostatic test (1.5× design pressure)
  6. For vertical sump: require submergence and dry-run protection test
  7. Specify acceptance criteria (head ±5%, efficiency ±3%, vibration ≤ISO 10816)
  8. Require witnessed test (customer or third party)
  9. Require test report with curves and raw data
  10. Require instrument calibration certificates
  11. For critical service: require API 610 testing
  12. Verify supplier has certified vertical pump test facility

Related Industries

Vertical pump performance testing applies to power generation (cooling water, boiler feed), oil and gas (process, water injection), mining (sump drainage, dewatering), chemical (sump, transfer), municipal (water supply, wastewater), marine (ballast, cooling), and general industrial (circulation, drainage). The core principle — systematic performance testing to verified standards with clear acceptance criteria for reliable vertical pump operation — is consistent across all industrial pump applications.
