When a pump runs at 300°C, the metal expands. The casing grows. The shaft grows. The baseplate grows. If the pump is foot-mounted (bolted to the baseplate at the bottom), the thermal expansion pushes the pump upward. The shaft centerline shifts. The coupling misaligns. The bearings and seals fail. Centerline mounting solves this problem by allowing the pump to expand symmetrically around the shaft centerline.
This guide explains why centerline mounting matters for high-temperature API 610 OH2 pumps and how it works.
The Problem: Thermal Expansion in Foot-Mounted Pumps
A standard foot-mounted pump has feet at the bottom of the casing. The feet are bolted to the baseplate. When the pump heats up, the casing expands upward from the feet. The shaft centerline moves up by the amount of thermal expansion.
Example: A carbon steel pump casing at 300°C. Coefficient of thermal expansion: 12 × 10⁻⁶ /°C. Temperature rise: 280°C (from 20°C ambient to 300°C operating). Casing height from feet to shaft centerline: 200 mm.
Thermal expansion = 200 mm × 12 × 10⁻⁶ × 280 = 0.67 mm.
The shaft centerline moves up by 0.67 mm. The motor (running cool, at 40°C) does not move. The coupling is now misaligned by 0.67 mm. API 610 alignment tolerance is 0.05 mm. The pump is 13x out of tolerance.
Consequences of misalignment:
- Bearing failure (radial load from misalignment)
- Mechanical seal failure (shaft deflection at seal faces)
- Coupling failure (excessive angular and parallel misalignment)
- Vibration (above API 610 limits)
For pumps operating above 200°C, foot mounting is not acceptable. Centerline mounting is required.
The Solution: Centerline Mounting
Centerline mounting (also called "centerline support") positions the pump mounting feet at the shaft centerline, not at the bottom of the casing. The casing expands symmetrically around the centerline — upward and downward equally. The shaft centerline does not move.
How it works:
- The mounting feet are at the horizontal centerline of the casing (same elevation as the shaft)
- The feet bolt to a vertical support bracket on the baseplate
- When the casing heats up, it expands upward from the centerline AND downward from the centerline
- The net movement at the shaft centerline is zero
- The coupling stays aligned
API 610 requires centerline mounting for pumps operating above 200°C (or when the purchaser specifies it). Our API 610 OH2 pump range offers centerline mounting as an option for high-temperature service.
Centerline vs Foot Mounting: Comparison
| Factor | Foot Mounted | Centerline Mounted |
|---|---|---|
| Shaft centerline movement at 300°C | 0.5–1.0 mm upward | 0 mm (no movement) |
| Alignment stability at high temp | Poor (misaligns) | Excellent (stays aligned) |
| Maximum recommended temperature | 200°C | 400°C+ |
| Cost | Lower (simpler casting) | Higher (more complex casting) |
| Baseplate design | Simple (flat plate) | More complex (vertical brackets) |
| Installation | Simpler (bolt to flat baseplate) | More complex (align to brackets) |
| API 610 requirement | Standard for <200°C | Required for >200°C |
When Centerline Mounting Is Required
Required by API 610 when:
- Operating temperature above 200°C
- Purchaser specifies centerline mounting
- Large thermal cycles (frequent startup/shutdown from ambient to operating temp)
Recommended when:
- Operating temperature 150–200°C (borderline — centerline gives extra margin)
- Critical service where alignment must be maintained (seal life is critical)
- Large pumps (above 300 kW) where thermal expansion is significant
Not needed when:
- Operating temperature below 150°C (thermal expansion is minimal)
- Intermittent service (pump does not stay hot long enough for significant expansion)
- Non-critical service (alignment drift is acceptable)
Centerline Mounting Design Details
Casing design: The casing has mounting feet cast integrally at the shaft centerline elevation. The feet are horizontal (parallel to the baseplate). They bolt to vertical support brackets.
Support brackets: Vertical brackets are welded or bolted to the baseplate. The pump feet bolt to the top of the brackets. The brackets are sized to match the casing centerline elevation.
Thermal growth allowance: The casing can expand freely in the horizontal direction (along the shaft axis). The feet slide on the brackets — no horizontal constraint. Vertical movement is constrained by the brackets (but the centerline does not move vertically, so no issue).
Alignment procedure: Align the pump and motor at ambient temperature. The centerline mounting ensures alignment is maintained at operating temperature. No hot alignment check is needed (unlike foot-mounted pumps, which require hot re-alignment).
Installation Considerations
1. Baseplate stiffness. The vertical support brackets must be rigid. If the brackets flex under pump weight, the pump shifts. Use thick steel brackets (10–15 mm plate) with gussets.
2. Grouting. The baseplate must be properly grouted to the foundation. Poor grouting allows the baseplate to flex, causing misalignment. Use epoxy grout (non-shrinking) for API 610 pumps.
3. Piping stress. Centerline mounting does not eliminate piping stress. The suction and discharge piping must be properly supported. Pipe stress on the pump flanges causes misalignment regardless of mounting style.
4. Coupling selection. Use a flexible coupling that can accommodate any residual misalignment. Disc coupling or gear coupling is standard for API 610 pumps. The coupling should have at least 2 mm parallel misalignment capacity.
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Foot-mounted pump for 300°C service. The pump misaligns when hot. Bearings and seals fail. Right answer: centerline mounted pump.
Mistake 2: Centerline mounted but weak brackets. The brackets flex under pump weight. The pump shifts. Right answer: rigid brackets with gussets.
Mistake 3: No hot alignment check for foot-mounted pumps. If you must use a foot-mounted pump above 200°C, do a hot alignment check after the pump reaches operating temperature. Re-align if needed. But centerline mounting is better.
Mistake 4: Ignoring piping stress. Even with centerline mounting, pipe stress on the flanges causes misalignment. Always check flange stress with loose bolts (the pump should not move when bolts are loosened).
Mistake 5: Rigid coupling. A rigid coupling cannot accommodate any misalignment. Even with centerline mounting, use a flexible coupling.
Real-World Example: Refinery Hot Oil Pump
A refinery had a foot-mounted hot oil pump operating at 320°C. The pump failed every 6 months — bearings and seals. The root cause: thermal expansion caused 0.8 mm misalignment. The coupling was at its limit. Bearings saw excessive radial load.
Solution: Replace with a centerline mounted pump. The shaft centerline stayed at the same elevation at 320°C. Alignment was maintained. Bearing life increased from 6 months to 5+ years. Seal life increased from 6 months to 3+ years.
Cost: Centerline mounted pump cost 15% more than foot-mounted. But the avoided downtime (2 failures/year × $50,000/failure = $100,000/year) paid for the premium in 2 weeks.
