Slurry pump material selection is a balance between abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance. Two common choices: high-chrome white iron (metal) and rubber lining (elastomer). Both handle abrasive slurry. But they work differently โ€” high-chrome resists abrasion by being hard, rubber resists abrasion by being elastic. For abrasive-corrosive service (FGD slurry, mining tailings, acidic ore), the choice is not obvious.

This guide compares high-chrome and rubber-lined pumps for abrasive-corrosive slurry service.

How Each Material Resists Wear

High-chrome white iron (A05/A49): A hard, brittle metal (550โ€“650 BHN). Abrasive particles hit the surface and bounce off. The metal does not deform โ€” it resists impact by hardness. But it is brittle โ€” large particles can crack it. And it corrodes in acidic slurry (pH below 5).

Rubber lining (natural rubber, polyurethane): An elastic material. Abrasive particles hit the surface and the rubber deforms, absorbing the impact energy. The particle bounces off without cutting. Rubber is not hard โ€” it is resilient. But it cannot handle large particles (they cut through the rubber) or high temperatures (above 80ยฐC).

The fundamental difference: high-chrome is hard and brittle. Rubber is soft and elastic. They resist abrasion by completely different mechanisms.

Abrasion Resistance Comparison

Slurry ConditionHigh-ChromeRubber-Lined
Fine particles (<0.5 mm)GoodExcellent (2โ€“3x longer life)
Medium particles (0.5โ€“2 mm)ExcellentGood
Coarse particles (>2 mm)ExcellentPoor (cuts through rubber)
High velocity (>5 m/s)GoodPoor (rubber tears at high velocity)
Low velocity (<3 m/s)GoodExcellent
High concentration (>30% solids)ExcellentGood

Rule of thumb: For fine particles at low velocity, rubber lasts 2โ€“3x longer than high-chrome. For coarse particles at high velocity, high-chrome is the only choice.

Corrosion Resistance Comparison

For abrasive-corrosive service (acidic slurry), corrosion is a second wear mechanism. The material must resist both abrasion and corrosion.

Slurry pHHigh-ChromeRubber-Lined
Neutral (pH 6โ€“8)ExcellentExcellent
Mild acid (pH 4โ€“6)Fair (corrosion starts)Excellent
Strong acid (pH 2โ€“4)Poor (corrodes rapidly)Excellent (natural rubber resists acid)
Alkaline (pH 8โ€“10)GoodExcellent
Chloride-containingPoor (pitting corrosion)Excellent

Key insight: High-chrome corrodes in acidic slurry. The corrosion weakens the metal surface, making it more susceptible to abrasion. The combined abrasion-corrosion wear rate is 3โ€“5x higher than abrasion alone. Rubber does not corrode โ€” it resists acid perfectly. For acidic slurry, rubber is often the better choice even for medium particles.

FGD Slurry: The Classic Abrasive-Corrosive Service

FGD (flue gas desulfurization) slurry is the classic abrasive-corrosive application. Limestone slurry at pH 5โ€“6, 15โ€“25% solids, particle size 0.01โ€“0.1 mm. It is mildly acidic and moderately abrasive.

High-chrome FGD pump: Impeller and casing in high-chrome white iron. Life: 1โ€“2 years. The mild acid slowly corrodes the high-chrome, accelerating wear.

Rubber-lined FGD pump: Impeller in high-chrome (rotating part needs rigidity), casing lined with natural rubber. Life: 3โ€“5 years. The rubber casing resists acid and fine abrasion. The high-chrome impeller handles the rotating abrasion.

Best practice for FGD: Use a hybrid โ€” high-chrome impeller + rubber-lined casing. This combines the best of both materials. The impeller (high velocity, rotating) uses high-chrome. The casing (lower velocity, static) uses rubber. Life: 3โ€“5 years for both components.

Our horizontal slurry pump range offers both high-chrome and rubber-lined configurations for FGD service.

Cost Comparison

Cost FactorHigh-ChromeRubber-Lined
Pump price (same size)$10,000โ€“$30,000$12,000โ€“$35,000 (rubber lining adds cost)
Impeller replacement$1,000โ€“$3,000$1,000โ€“$3,000 (impeller is still high-chrome)
Casing liner replacement$2,000โ€“$5,000 (metal liner)$1,500โ€“$4,000 (rubber liner)
Expected life (FGD slurry)1โ€“2 years3โ€“5 years
Annual maintenance costHigher (more frequent replacement)Lower (longer life)

Rubber-lined pumps cost 10โ€“20% more upfront. But they last 2โ€“3x longer in abrasive-corrosive service. Total cost over 5 years is lower for rubber-lined pumps.

When to Choose High-Chrome

Choose high-chrome when:

  • Particles are coarse (>2 mm)
  • Velocity is high (>5 m/s)
  • Slurry is neutral or alkaline (pH 6+)
  • Temperature is above 80ยฐC (rubber cannot handle it)
  • The pump is in a high-impact service (large particles, high velocity)

Typical applications: Mining coarse ore slurry, dredging, high-velocity tailings, neutral pH mineral processing.

When to Choose Rubber-Lined

Choose rubber-lined when:

  • Particles are fine (<1 mm)
  • Velocity is low-to-moderate (<5 m/s)
  • Slurry is acidic (pH below 6)
  • Temperature is below 80ยฐC
  • Long service life is more important than upfront cost

Typical applications: FGD slurry, fine tailings, acidic ore processing, chemical slurry, wastewater with solids.

Common Material Selection Mistakes

Mistake 1: High-chrome for acidic FGD slurry. The high-chrome corrodes in the mild acid. Wear rate accelerates. Pump life drops to 6 months. Right answer: rubber-lined casing + high-chrome impeller.

Mistake 2: Rubber for coarse mining slurry. Large particles cut through the rubber liner. The liner fails in 3 months. Right answer: high-chrome.

Mistake 3: Rubber at high temperature. Above 80ยฐC, natural rubber softens and loses elasticity. The liner bulges and delaminates. Right answer: high-chrome or polyurethane (PU handles up to 120ยฐC).

Mistake 4: Ignoring velocity. Rubber works great at 3 m/s. At 6 m/s, the rubber tears. Always check the pump's velocity at the operating point before selecting rubber.
